Who this is for
New keepers setting up their first bearded dragon, or anyone replacing an undersized tank before the animal outgrows it (again). Not a veterinary care guide — husbandry sizing and gear only.
Non-negotiables
- Adult floor size: Plan for 4×2×2 (approx. 120×60×60 cm) as the default adult enclosure.
- Linear T5 HO UVB: Mounted to deliver a useful UVI at basking distance — see our UVB buyer guide.
- Thermostatted heat: Especially for CHE and high-watt lamps — see thermostat essentials.
- Measurement tools: IR temp gun for surfaces; digital probes for ambient.
What to avoid
- Pet-store “complete kits” with 20–40 gallon tanks and coil UVB
- Dial stick-on thermometers as your only temp source
- Heat rocks and unregulated mats as primary heat
- Buying a temporary small enclosure “just for now” without a written upgrade date
Recommended build (BOM)
Bearded dragon — first-year component build
- Enclosure4×2×2 PVC (Zen / Kages / solid budget PVC)
Adult floor from day one; front doors; holds heat better than thin glass kits.
$250–$550View on Amazon - UVBT5 HO linear (Arcadia 12% or Zoo Med 10.0) + reflector fixture
Beardies need a usable UVI gradient — not a coil bulb in a dome.
$60–$120View on Amazon - HeatHalogen / deep heat + thermostat (dimming preferred for lamps)
Create a basking spot and cool side; never free-run high-watt heat.
$40–$180View on Amazon - MeasureInfrared temp gun + digital probe thermometer/hygrometer
Verify surface basking temps and ambient gradient; dial stick-ons lie.
$25–$50View on Amazon - FurnishingsBasking platform, hides (warm + cool), food/water dishes
Functional climbing/basking height under UVB; secure hides both sides.

Upgrade-tax math (why kits lose)
A cheap kit looks affordable until you replace the enclosure, the UVB, the heat, and the thermometers within months. Buying adult-size PVC + T5 HO + controlled heat once usually lands closer to a single coherent spend — and the animal never lives in an undersized box.
Setup checklist
- Assemble enclosure; seal gaps; confirm doors latch
- Mount T5 fixture (account for mesh UVB loss if top-mounted)
- Place basking lamp on thermostat; set probe at basking height carefully
- Map warm / cool / basking with temp gun before introducing the animal
- Add hides, water, and substrate appropriate for your management style
FAQ
Can I start in a 40-gallon and upgrade later?
You can, but most keepers underestimate how fast “later” arrives — and how much money the double purchase costs. If budget is tight, prioritize the enclosure and UVB; defer décor.
Is a coil UVB “better than nothing”?
For a diurnal basker, coil/compact UVB is a false economy. Budget for a T5 HO tube and fixture instead of buying a coil you’ll throw away.
